Ohio Giant 173 Nontypical Green Score
I had been hunting in pouring rain and East winds for 3 days straight in Ohio with little activity, however the bucks seemed to still be on their feet. I was going to leave after the morning hunt on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, as I was due in Gaylord to meet up with my family for dinner at 1pm Thanksgiving day. And boy oh boy I am glad I didnt leave... Wed morning hunt came and went, blowing 30 and rain. Frustrated, and soaked I went back to camp and checked the radar. To my surprise, it was going to clear by 2 pm, and winds were going to ease out of the NW , perfect for me. So I decided to stay and hunt that evening. At around 4 30 out of the tall grass I spot a doe move briskly into the cut corn. My insticts told me that there was certain to be a buck pushing her. And there was. a true Giant, without exaggeration, he was 5-6 inches outside his ears on both sides with a heavy symmetrical rack. the doe brought him past me at 30 yds, I grunted, then louder, to no avail. He had one thing on his mind. I watched as they crossed the fence row into the green field behind me. With my heart sunk, thinking I had just blown the chance of a lifetime, I look up to see yet another doe pop out of the tall grass, and now I am hearing grunting in Stereo, VERY COOL! She was on the same trail as the first doe, and not moving as quick. Thats when he appeared, I was blown away by his mass and height, and knew THIS had to be the one. She lured him to within 40 yards and I grunted, this time louder than I ever have! He stopped for what seemed to be only a split second, I released the arrow, struck him mid cavity taking out both lungs. He ran 30 yards and I watched in disbelief as he died in front of me. I hung my bow, and grabbed the binos, saw he was expired, and thats when it really hit me. After 38 years in the pursuit of a deer like this, countless hours on stand, traveling, leaving my girls at home, I had done it. Overcome with emotion, I sat quietly in my stand, and yes,,,sobbed like a 3 year old. He green scored 173 Nontypical, has a 29 inch main beam on the right side, 28 inch main beam on the left side, split G2's on both sides with 6 inch bases. The deer was 5 1/2 years old. I saw some great deer in Ohio, and he was the Third largest. All this from reconnecting with an old friend on Facebook after almost 20 years who has a farm in Ohio. I am blessed to have this opportunity, and you better believe I will be back every year!
